Cost of Attendance

The basis for awarding financial aid funds is the Cost of Attendance (COA). The cost of attendance, also referred to as the budget, reflects typical expense patterns of University at Buffalo students based on research conducted by the Office of Financial Aid in conjunction with the academic divisions. While actual expenses will vary based on lifestyle, the estimated costs listed should assist you in planning your own budget.

The estimated budgets represent an assumed typical enrollment for students within each program for an academic year (fall and spring).

The estimated budget is made up of direct costs and indirect costs. Direct costs are charges that will be billed to you via eBill through the Office of Student Accounts. The charges include tuition, fees, and housing charges for on-campus residents. Indirect costs are calculations of other educational expenses students typically incur while attending school, but are not billed by the University. Indirect costs include off-campus housing and board, books and supplies, loan origination fees, and personal and transportation allowances.

Cost of Attendance by Program

Sometimes your actual expenses exceed UB's budgeted cost to attend. When this happens, a budget increase may be necessary. Budget increases are considered on a case-by-case basis and are subject to review and approval. Expenses must be under the student's name, and must be incurred during the current school year. A Budget Increase Request form must be completed in full, and returned will supporting documentation to the Office of Financial Aid before the last day of classes of the academic year.

Information is subject to change without notice due to changes in federal, state and/or institutional rules and regulations. Students must complete a FAFSA every year. Students must be making satisfactory academic progress to continue to receive financial aid.
